In a recent interview on the Million $ Worth of Game podcast, she explained how evolving sampling laws have continued to reinforce a system that disadvantages Black artists. After highlighting legendary Black artists who paved the way for so many, Lizzo pointed out that sampling laws weren’t in place to protect them, even as white performers like #ElvisPresley profited from their work. She added that those laws now exist, but to protect white artists from having their work stolen.
