#ChaunceyBillups and #TerryRozier will be away from their teams for the time being.
The #NBA has announced that Billups, Portland Trail Blazers head coach, and Miami Heat’s Terry Rozier have been placed “on immediate leave” following their arrests Thursday morning (Oct. 23). The league said it is cooperating with authorities, adding, “The integrity of our game remains our top priority.”
The men were among more than 30 people taken into custody as part of a sweeping federal investigation into illegal sports-betting and poker-rigging schemes allegedly backed by the mafia. At a press conference, FBI Director #KashPatel declared, “This is the insider-trading saga for the NBA.”
The probe spans multiple states and years. One case, dubbed Operation Nothing But Bet by federal agents, centers on athletes and coaches providing non-public performance and injury information to betting rings. The second case, Operation Royal Flush, involves underground poker games allegedly rigged with technology and managed by organized crime groups. Reports estimate total illicit gains reached tens of millions of dollars. Rozier was charged in the first indictment, and Billups in the second.
