Run DMC Star Jam Master Jay’s M*rder Case Takes A Turn + Judge Overturns One Conviction, Says Prosecutors Failed To Prove Motive
A long-running hip-hop murder case took an unexpected turn this week after a federal judge set aside one of the convictions tied to the k*lling of a rap legend.
A federal judge has overturned the conviction of one of the men found guilty in the 2002 k*lling of Jam Master Jay, marking a dramatic shift in one of hip-hop’s most closely watched criminal cases.
On Friday, U.S. District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall vacated the conviction of Karl Jordan Jr., ruling prosecutors failed to prove he had a drg-related motive for the mrder.
Jordan had been convicted in 2024 of klling Jay, born Jason Mizell, inside a Queens recording studio. While an eyewitness testified he saw Jordan sh*t Mizell, the court found the government’s motive evidence insufficient. Judge Hall wrote that the proof was “at most ‘meager.’”
“We are really happy for Mr. Jordan and his family that justice was served,” Jordan’s attorney John Diaz said. Jordan remains jailed on unrelated drug charges. Meanwhile, the judge denied motions from co-defendant Ronald Washington, whose conviction stands.
Jay’s d*ath remains one of hip-hop’s most enduring tragedies. As a founding member of Run-D.M.C., Mizell helped propel the genre into the mainstream.
