The UK Is Permanently Banning Anyone Born After 2008 From Ever Purchasing Tobacco Products
The UK has moved a step closer to creating what officials call a “smoke-free generation” after a landmark #tobacco bill cleared its final stages in parliament.
The legislation will make it illegal for anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 to ever legally purchase tobacco, meaning younger generations will be permanently barred from buying cigarettes even as they age. Ministers hope the policy will phase out smoking over time and dramatically reduce tobacco-related harm. The bill—known as the Tobacco and Vapes Bill—has now passed both the House of Commons and House of Lords and is expected to become law once it receives royal assent.
Alongside the generational ban, the legislation also gives the government new powers to regulate vaping products, including restrictions on marketing and rules aimed at reducing youth #nicotine use. While health leaders have strongly backed the move, critics have raised concerns about unintended consequences, including the risk that strict regulations could push users toward unregulated alternatives or undermine efforts to help existing smokers quit. Despite the pushback, supporters are hailing the measure as a historic public health intervention that could protect future generations from addiction and long-term illness.
#TJBCrew, should America implement a law like this?
