Maryland Gov. Wes Moore Steps In To Help Disenrolled Howard University Students, Offers Financial Relief & Expedited Admissions

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore is extending a lifeline to students impacted by Howard University’s recent mass disenrollment.

On Thursday (July 30), Moore announced that Maryland will offer expedited admissions support and an $800 credit to eligible students who were recently disenrolled from Howard University and choose to enroll at a participating University System of Maryland (USM) institution this fall. The announcement comes after more than 500 incoming Howard students were removed from enrollment just weeks before the start of the fall semester.

According to the governor’s office, Moore directed the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the University System of Maryland to establish a coordinated process that will help affected students identify available academic programs, navigate financial aid options, and receive expedited late admissions reviews at participating USM schools with available space. Students who enroll will also receive an $800 credit to help offset the nonrefundable enrollment and housing deposits they previously paid to Howard University.

“These students worked hard, earned admission to college, and were preparing to begin the next chapter of their lives,” Moore said in a statement. “Maryland is moving with urgency to give them a clear path forward—with hands-on support, expedited admissions assistance, and financial relief—so they can stay on track toward earning their degree.”

Howard University has since reinstated some of the affected students, but many are still searching for alternatives just weeks before classes begin. Maryland joins New York, which recently announced similar expedited admissions opportunities for impacted students through its public university systems.
