Cam Newton Says He’s Trying To Repair His Relationship With Black Women: ‘The Only Thing I Can Say Is, I’m Sorry’

Cam Newton is publicly apologizing to Black women while acknowledging that some of his past words and actions have contributed to a larger problem.

During a conversation on his Funky Friday podcast, the former NFL quarterback reflected on the way Black women have been treated and admitted he hasn’t always used his platform to speak up. “This is the oppression that our Black women have dealt with, even with Black men, even with the industry, even with Atlanta,” Newton said. “It’s like, man, I’m sorry.”

Newton said becoming a father to daughters has also caused him to look at certain situations differently. Referencing his daughters, he asked men to consider how they would react if their own daughters received troubling messages from a man. “What that would ignite in me is something that would not be healthy for nobody, especially that individual who sent it,” he said.

The 2015 NFL MVP then issued a public apology and acknowledged that he’s still learning. “So I take this time to apologize publicly, but also to say I’m a work in progress,” Newton said. “I’m really trying to rehabilitate my relationship with Black women. And when I have conversations like this, the only thing that I can say is, I’m sorry.”

Newton also acknowledged the influence his platform carries, adding, “I know the weight of my voice now, and I’m learning more.” He said uncomfortable conversations are necessary to move things forward, while recognizing there have been things that have “set us back” when it comes to relationships between men and women.
