Condolences: Pioneering BET Host & Radio Personality Angela Stribling Has D!ed At 58

Very sad news. The broadcasting world is mourning the loss of Angela Stribling, the pioneering BET host, longtime Washington, D.C. radio personality and jazz vocalist. She was 58.

Stribling passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Sept. 26, following a two-year battle with brain cancer, according to her husband, Ken Washington. In a statement, Washington said he and Stribling’s sister, Darlene, were by her side when she d!ed. A celebration of life is expected to be held in Washington, D.C., at a later date.

Stribling built a decades-long career across television, radio and music. She was the first woman to host WHUR’s Original Quiet Storm and became one of BET’s pioneering on-air personalities, spending four years hosting the network’s entertainment news program “Screen Scene.” She later helped launch BET Jazz, hosting programs including “Jazz Central,” “BET Jazz Discovery” and “BET Jazz Scene.”

Beyond broadcasting, Stribling was an accomplished jazz vocalist who performed around the world and shared the stage with music legends including Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan. Her distinctive voice was also heard through numerous voiceover projects and her longtime radio work.

WHUR remembered Stribling for not only her extensive career but also the impact she had on those around her, describing her as a woman known for her “kindness, grace, infectious laugh and willingness to encourage others.” The station said her loss is deeply felt by colleagues, listeners and the Washington community she served for decades.
