Critics Give Alicia Keys’s ‘Stick Fly’ Mixed Reviews

Cast of 'Stick Fly'
Alicia Keys serves as producer and actor in the Broadway play, ‘Stick Fly’. And unfortunately, critics weren’t too fond of the production, directed by Kenny Leon. ‘Stick Fly’ is a story of two African-American brothers, played by Mekhi Pfifer and Dule Hill, who choose the same weekend to bring their girlfriends home for the first time to the family’s Martha’s Vineyard estate. Pfifer’s character brings home a ‘white girl’, which shocks the entire family. The play takes a sharp turn to bickering about race and class.

David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter described the show as “scattershot entertainment” and said the production “lacked emotional substance” and “comes up short as both comedy and dysfunctional family drama”. Of Keys’ influence on the show, Rooney says her “transitional music is used too liberally, more often calling attention to itself than serving the dramatic tone”. Another critic, The New York Posts’ Elisabeth Vincentelli, dismissed the three-hour long show as “sluggish” and said it “could benefit from some tightening”. P.S. Critics assessment aside, if you’ve seen the play for yourself, please chime and share your thoughts.
