Brandy Releases Official Whitney Houston Statement, “My heart is destroyed…”

The award winning 1997 musical “Rodgers and Hammerstein Cinderella,” famously called “The Black Cinderella,” highlighted the musical talents of some of the best stars in the industry today. Singer and actress Brandy Norwood starred as Cinderella in the film, and the late RnB phenomenon Whitney Houston played her fairy godmother. Since then, the two have remained close, as Houston served as a mentor and idol for Brandy.

And on Saturday, Brandy’s 33rd birthday, just hours before she was set to perform her classic “The Boy is Mine” and new single “It All Belongs To Me,” with singer Monica at the legendary Clive Davis pre-grammy party, the news of Houston’s death hit the waves. A few days before, while rehearsing for their performance, a video clip was released showing Houston stopping by the ladies’ rehearsal to give them some words of advice. In the video, Monica said,
“When so many things were happening in my life that weren’t in favor of me reaching my full potential, [Houston] was always there pushing me and I think that it made it feel good when she was in the audience just  reminding us, helping us with sound, doing different things today because their expertise, her or Mr. Davis, it can’t be found anywhere else.”
No one foresaw the impending doom that was to fall on Hollywood mere days later. It is no surprise that their performance was cancelled as it must have been hard news to bear, seeing that they were just with her days before. Brandy attended the party however, but later told US Weekly she was in a “bad space” and was unable to sing. And yesterday, Brandy released a statement mourning the loss of her mentor and teacher and honoring her legacy.
“My heart is destroyed. I lost my idol and dear friend. My prayers go out to Whitney’s family and her millions of fans around the world. Whitney — the greatest voice of all time — you are my angel and I will always and forever love you.”
Houston’s body was flown to Newark, NJ via Tyler Perry’s private jet yesterday evening. The funeral will be held in Newark later this week.
