Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta Petition Hits :: Will You Sign It or Tune In?
It looks like Basketball Wives isn’t the only one that’s catching heat with an online petition suggesting that it should be off air. VH1’s new reality show, Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta has also received a petition. Similar to BBall Wives’ petition, they are also calling for VH1 sponsors to pull the plug. Read part of the petition below:
After we made a ruckus about Basketball Wives, sponsors began to pull ads. Well, it’s that time again, folks!
While we should respect the perceptions and experiences of the men and women featured on “reality” television shows, networks are airing stories that could be very helpful for people to hear, but they’re telling these stories in EXTREMELY dangerous ways.
We all know premium digital crack rock is ‘slanged’ in digital hoods other than VH1. We also know the problem is not just TV–it’s a big, mean, social monster that we’ve gotta shoot down one non-violent bullet at a time. Nevertheless, somebody’s gotta be the face of this lovely movement. And since VH1 has chosen to give us yet another beautifully-blinged jewel of commercial exploitation (Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta), they might as well be the face of change. By the way, shout out to all African Americans who received Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta as their Juneteenth gift! You won and lost at the same time!
As we work toward national- and local-level change, let’s tell VH1 and their sponsors (again) why people from a broad range of backgrounds will NOT stand for the exploitation of the lived experiences of people who may not even know they’re being exploited. This isn’t a “Black or White” thing, this is a HUMAN thing…and we should all understand.
P.S. That “turn of the TV/your kids’ TV if you don’t want to watch” argument doesn’t work here, VH1. A good number of the kids who are most at risk don’t have the luxury of living with parents who can just “turn off the TV”. Why? Because their parents are out working multiple jobs (thanks to this lovely thing called poverty); one or both parents are on drugs, dead, or in jail; or they’re raised by ill grandparents, relatives who aren’t that interested in their future, or foster parents who abuse them and only foster to collect a check.

These petitions are really getting out of control! I was all for people being against Basketball Wives, simply because there was a serious issue of being bullied and that is a huge issue among our youth today. However, Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta is just poor entertainment lol…if people want to put their business on the street for all of us to see, we can either laugh and move on or decide not to watch anymore. I think there is a strong distinction between both reality shows and at this point people are just looking for a cause to stand next to because, they too, want their 15 minutes of shine time. Get a life people and save the energy for a worthy cause!
You are right and what amazes me about the petitions that so many are rallying and jumping on a bandwagon with is; some probably do not take this much initiative or action by voting, doing anything to uplift their own neighborhoods (i.e. – local schools) or other injustices. I wonder when a business such as a strip club, liquor store, cash checking, pawn shop etc applies for a business license who goes to voice a resounding no not here not today. Pick your battles!
I dnt think this show needs a petition..just dnt watch it….now I did sign the petition for BBW becuz I felt that was bullying and violence and it was outta control, but Love…is just bad acting so if u dnt ike it dnt watch it.

What is going on on Hip Hop, is something that is happening on a daily basis right now. I feel like they are bring light to the music industry cut throats. The cheating,domestic violence, etc, should be brought to light. It don’t just happen in your everyday households. These issues don’t go by how much money you have in your bank accounts. Some like to think that once you get with the rich and famous, life is easy. Well, it’s not. This is nothing short of the black version of Young and the Restless. It’s just dummy-downed, and less glamerous. People keep saying that these shows are making black women be protrayed as low class, bullies, disrespect, and ignorant. Well, I’d rather them watch it on tv if I had to choose cause when they open their doors @ home, the real reality is on the door step. And it gets no real than that.
