Kenya Barris & Pharrell Williams Working On Juneteenth Musical For Netflix
According to reports, Nexflix is in talks with television producer Kenya Barris and singer/producer Pharrell Williams to develop a feature-length musical about Juneteenth. Juneteenth is celebrated in America annually on June 19th to commemorate the ending of slavery. The rumored musical isn’t the only work Pharrell Williams is putting in towards spreading the word about Juneteenth. On June 16th the ‘Happy’ singer teamed up with the Governor of his home state, Governor Ralph Northam, to share the news that Juneteenth will now be a paid holiday for state employees in Virginia.
This isn’t the first time talks about a Juneteenth project involving Kenya Barris and Pharrell Williams have surfaced. As previously reported, it was announced that the two creatives were working on bringing a live stage Juneteenth musical to life back in 2018. The inspiration for the musical came from the season 4 opener episode of Black-ish which is ironically titled “Juneteenth: The Musical.”
Even though there are reportedly similarities between the two Juneteenth projects the Netflix feature-length musical is separate from the live musical version that was announced in 2018.
