Waka Flocka Hits DC, Ducks Legal Issues, Loves Animals & Ain’t Fake

On Friday April 15th, Juaquin Bertholimule Malphurs (rap name Waka Flocka Flame) hit Washington D.C. and performed at DC Star Nightclub. I spoke with the 24-year-old rapper before he hit the stage and while he’s very “colorful”, he is also very genuine and reminds me of a million regular street dudes from around the way. In the midst of an entourage of fifteen dudes and weed smoke e’rywhere, I got a glimpse of the real Waka.

- About his new mixtape, Benjamin Flocka: “My friends, fans, and family inspired me to do my new mix tape.” (Waka also joked that I’d be featured on his new mix-tape but obviously that isn’t happening). “My new album Triple F Life (Friends, Fans, & Family), is coming out this year. It’ll have Brick Squad [members] on it.”
- On his surprising PETA ad: “For me it was about animal rights. No I’m not a vegetarian. I feel strongly about protecting the rights of animals.”
- He was quite tight lipped about his legal issues: “It’s old news. I can’t let it make today’s headlines.”
- On what we can expect in the future: “Lots of charity events and movies. If I tell you (about the movies), it won’t be secret.”
- On his fans: “I love my fans from the bottom of my heart. I connect with them in a real way and not a fake way.”

While a lot of folks think that Waka isn’t the most intellectual person or rapper, my one-on-one interaction with him was a different experience. Hell, he’s the only person that I interviewed while lighting AND smoking a jay in my face but at least he offered to share! LoL. No but really, dude is very comfortable and confident in his skin. Love him or hate him, you can’t help but nod your head at his latest hit. Plus, he’s outlasted a lot of other rappers to date. For all things Waka visit his website or follow him on Twitter.
