Jay-Z Hits Radio…Talks Kanye Beef, “I would never put my hands on him.”

On his way to the Roc Nation Rocawear office, where he works as often as he can, Jay-Z decided to stop in to Hot 97 and give Angie Martinez a surprise visit. While he was there, Angie got to ask him a few questions about his relationship with Kanye, the “Watch the Throne” album, and more. Here are some quotes from the convo.

On his alleged beef with Kanye:

“Kanye’s my brother. Yes, we get on each other’s nerves but that’s part of pushing each other. People that have a problem with Kanye or myself are people who are complacent in life. People don’t like to be pushed, it’s annoying [when] people are pushing you to be greater. And we push each other to be greater. So of course there are times when we’re in the studio and we’re yelling but that’s about it. I would never disrespect that man, I have so much respect for him. I would never put my hands on him.”

On the pressure to make this album great:

“I guess there was a bit after we started the album but I don’t look at it like that. When you’re making music you’re against history, you’re against what’s current and you’re against your past work. As far as pressure on what it’s going to sound like you try not to let that affect you. I think you have to have a bit of arrogance to say ‘this is gonna be good.’ We’re in the business to challenge ourselves. If I was complacent I wouldn’t be making albums.”

On how great he thinks the album is:

“[The album is] a ten because of the timing of the album. What’s going on in music and the music that we made for this album is perfect. There’s a lot of dance floor music and sought of music. Just making music for the sake of making music that felt good.”

On “Otis”:

“The beauty of that song is when people come up to me and say ‘it gives me that feeling of the first time I heard Hip-Hop.’ That, exactly, was the intent of the album. Later he added, “We just did a video [for Otis]. It’s real simple and amazing. Spike Jones shot it.”

On the problem independent retailers had with his exclusive deals for iTunes and Best Buy + Hackers:

“I feel a little bad about it but at the same time we made this album, it took 8 months, we should be able to release it the way we like. The real reason is that we didn’t want the music to leak. When you send it out physically, that and the hackers [causes it to leak so fast]. It’s not going to leak because we took great care to deliver this to the people.”

Before he left, he also mentioned that he still thinks Barack Obama is the second coolest person in the world besides himself; that he wants to make music for the rest of his life; and that he is also in a movie deal with Will Smith. Here’s a short clip of the interview to hear for yourself.
