PETA Laces Russell Simmons With Dope Title
Russell Simmons, known for being one of hip-hop’s most powerful mogul’s, has received an award that speaks to his personal lifestyle and beliefs. Simmons was named PETA’s 2011 Person Of The Year, joining other famous folk like Bill Clinton (2010), Ellen DeGeneres (2009) and Oprah Winfrey (2008).

Simmons has lived a balanced and holistic lifestyle for many years and is very open about his commitment to veganism (a choice he made in 1998). On twitter, on different reality shows and in other public arenas, Simmons has discussed his commitment to living a holistic life. And for his efforts, PETA laced him with the organization’s new “Vegetarian Icons” U.S. Postal Service collectors stamp earlier this month.
Of this honor, Simmons said,
“The horrible abuse of animals is the worst karmic disaster in the history of human kind. The work PETA does to combat this catastrophe is amazing. I’m truly humbled to be chosen as this year’s Person of the Year, but the praise should go to the hundreds of thousands of volunteers that are on the ground doing the work. I accept this honor on their behalf.”
PETA’s Senior Vice President, Lisa Lange explained:
“Russell Simmons uses his influence and success to encourage everyone to think about others, human or not, and to live compassionately. Simmons’ philosophy — that everyone should stick up for the little guy — is one that everyone can follow.”
Pretty cool huh?
