[EXCLUSIVE] Denyce Lawton Displeased With Reality TV Experience: They Edited Me To Be The Villian

Lets just say that 99% was all false and fabricated and I feel like I was misrepresented and I was edited to be a villain so that someone else could be a hero.

theJasmineBRAND.com: You and Eva Marcille were quite close when you were on the show together, what’s your relationship like with her now?
I wish her well.
theJasmineBRAND.com: Switching gears, whats your relationship status these days?
Uhm..I am not single and he’s not in the industry at all.
theJasmineBRAND.com: What’s the toughest part  of working in the industry?
The toughest part of being in the industry is being away from him [lol] and my family. There’s not just one tough thing, it’s a multitude of things from the issues with being a person of color and your battling with people who aren’t of color that work a lot or more often, being bi-racial and being of Asian and African- American ethnicities, it’s hard for people a lot to try and place me because they don’t see me as one or the other and so a lot of the time they box me into this ambiguous box where they don’t know what to do and that’s tough. Then you’re dealing with the sexism in Hollywood, you’re dealing with racism in Hollywood and not just from outside of the African-American community but inside the African-American community where there’s the ‘light -skin vs. dark-skin, long hair vs. short hair’ so it’s a lot. It’s a lot of hings that can be tough about the industry when you’re constantly being picked at and when you’re in a fishbowl for everybody to critique and say ‘Hey, I like your acting, I don’t like you’re acting. You’re worth my money or you’re not worth my money’.

theJasmineBRAND.com: What’s the most annoying interview question that you’re asked?
‘What are you doing next?’ It’s like people always assume that you always have to have something going to say relevant when they don’t even understand that sometimes you’re doing something behind the scenes. Sometimes people voluntarily just say ‘Listen, I’m tired I want to focus on my family, I want to focus on my down time. I’ve made my money, I’ve made my mark and I just want to relax.’ Or they do the ‘What have I seen you in?’ It’s like if I name a whole bunch of stuff and you still don’t know, we’ve just wasted time.

theJasmineBRAND.com: What’s the most slept on film or project that you were involved in?
I don’t really know,  I’ve done a lot of Indie Films but I’ve done television and a lot of guest starring spots. I feel like when it comes to the African-American community, I think that everything can be slept on because people don’t turn off BET and I do a lot of things on ABC, I do a lot of  white TV shows or Latina shows or Asian shows and there’s been a lot of projects that people are just like ‘I haven’t seen you on TV in a long time’ , well I’m like turn off BET and not to diss BET because one of the films I executive produce is on heavy rotation, Thank you, it’s Frat Brothers.

theJasmineBRAND.com: What is the biggest misconception about you?
I don’t really know, honestly. There’s going to always be rumors and there’s always going to be things. I think from that show people think that I’m crazy and it’s like,  I think we all have a little crazy in us but I really don’t know what people say about me to say ‘Hey that’s not true, that’s true.’ I think on the average in my personal life, I think the biggest misconception about me probably is that [I’m] maybe a doormat or a punching bag. I’m a sweet person by nature, I love everyone and I wear my heart on my sleeve so people are like ‘Oh, she’s so emotional, she’s so sensitive’ and it’s like no I just love hard and so I think a lot of people sometimes gravitate towards me and they gravitates towards that without realizing that there may be some selfishness in what their doing and then with me wearing my heart on my sleeve, I get emotional about it.
