Oprah Winfrey Sets Record Straight On Rumored ‘Secret Son’ Ambush
This week, stories were circulating that Oprah Winfrey was “ambushed” by her “secret son,” Calvin Mitchell. Reportedly, the incident happened this month, outside the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York. The media mogul is addressing reports, with Entertainment Tonight’s Nancy O’Dell. Oprah explains that Calvin is not her birth son, but someone that she helped as a child:
I met Calvin around the early ’90s, I think it was 1992. I was doing a film for television called There Are No Children Here. We were shooting in the projects in Chicago and I was sitting on set during a break, and this cute little sparkly-eyed boy came underneath the yellow tape to hand me a soda. I was so charmed by him that I started talking to him about his family, his school life, and found out that he was in a situation where his mother didn’t have a job and they were stuck in the projects.
Oprah says that she decided to help the family move out of the projects, find employment for Calvin’s mother, and enroll Calvin in a local private school.

This was heartwarming. Oprah tried to help repeatedly only to be taken advantage of, yet she doesn’t stop.
That’s sad that he tried to take advantage of her like that. When he was growing up the ignorant people around him probably kept saying, “She got all that money. She could just give us some money ‘stead of us goin’ ta school and workin’.” That’s all he was looking for – looking for a consult without having to do a damned thing. Sad hood mentality.
“come up”
AGREED. I must say that I’ve always felt away about Oprah building a school in Africa because I felt there is many she could’ve helped here… That is until now! I’m sure he ain’t the only person or family she has tried to help or is currently helping. I commend her and love the way she handled this situation overall. It’s very sad that even when helped nowadays people still never do right, smh.
