Mathew Knowles Side Steps Cheating, Domestic Violence Questions When Asked About Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’: I’ve never hit my daughter.
Things got a little awkward this week, while Mathew Knowles discussed Beyonce’s new album, Lemonade.
This week, Sirius XM host Mark Thompson interviewed Beyonce’s father while he was in class with his students at Texas Southern University. Thompson said Mathew Knowles requested the interview himself, but when certain subjects came up during the interview, he became frustrated and guarded.
Thompson played a clip of Lemonade, from when Beyonce is presumably talking to her mother about an abusive relationship.
He asked Knowles if he thought Beyonce was referring to him. To this, Knowles responded,
I don’t know but I don’t think so. I’ve never in my life hit my daughter.
When it was clarified that Beyonce was referring to someone hitting her mother, Knowles responded by saying,
Well, there’s no way that we can get into the mind of Beyonce. Only Beyonce can answer who specifically she was talking to.
He continued,
I’d rather not get into speculation, so my answer is I don’t know. I can only speak of being a proud father. I think Beyonce pushed the envelope of creativity on this HBO special.
When asked by the SiriusXM interviewer to explain when Beyonce says on Lemonade, “You remind me of my father, A magician. Able to exist in two places at once. In the tradition of men in my blood, you come home at 3 am and lie to me. What are you hiding?”, Knowles had very little explanation.
I have no reaction sir. I know the response you want to get. You’re not going to get that response.
However Beyonce’s father did share how excited he was about the online response to Lemonade.
I think that’s incredible. I am so proud of Beyonce, because that means the body of work that she did has made that type of impact on the marketplace. Everybody’s talking about it, everybody’s tweeting about it.
