‘Black Panther’ Makes $1 Billion!
“Black Panther” continues to win at the box office! The Ryan Coogler directed superhero film “Black Panther” is officially a member of the $1 billion club. According to reports, the film earned an additional $41.1m in North America in its fourth weekend of domestic release, falling just 37% and bringing its 24-day cume to $562m, including $46m in IMAX alone.
The film has now earned more than “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” ($532 million in 2016/2017) and “The Dark Knight” ($534m in 2008), making it the seventh-biggest domestic grosser of all time. It’s also the second-biggest superhero movie ever in North America behind only “The Avengers” ($623m).
When adjusted for inflation, “Black Panther’s” $562 million domestic total now sits behind only “Batman” ($251m in 1989/$577m adjusted), “Spider-Man” ($403m in 2002/$638m adjusted), The Dark Knight ($534m in 2008/$684m adjusted) and “The Avengers” ($623m in 2012/$706m adjusted).
It snagged a $66.5 million debut weekend in China, including $7.4m in IMAX. And the movie has earned over $516m overseas alone, for a $1.078 billion global total with at least a little gas left in the tank. It now ranks as the 21st-biggest global grosser of all time and the sixth-biggest superhero movie behind only “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.08b), “Captain America: Civil War” ($1.153b), “Iron Man 3” ($1.215b), “Avengers: Age of Ultron” ($1.4b) and “The Avengers” ($1.5b). If it passes “Iron Man 3”, it’ll be the biggest solo superhero flick.
