“Pose” Actress Dominique Jackson Slams Coach For Misgendering: Do Your Research!

Dominique Jackson is calling out designer staple, Coach for what she considers more than just a missed lapse in judgement. In a video, Jackson articulated her experience of briefly working with the company, detailing her distaste in how she felt “misgendered” and “insulted.” The original video was shared on Instagram Tuesday, she gleefully introduces viewers and informs them of their discomfort with the brand,

Happy Pride everyone. I hope you guys have been watching and enjoying Pose. But as we’re doing something like this, a lot of stuff comes by. And that is, a lot of companies, join in the Pride celebration to show they’re all inclusive when they’re really not. They don’t research us, they don’t understand, they don’t attempt to comprehend us.

She provides details,

Coach contacted me and asked me to come in and tell my life story. ‘Oh here, be a part of this, it’s going to be great.’ They offered nothing! Not a car ride, not a pocket book – nothing!

She goes on to elaborate on an extended part of her experience, and highlights the company misgendered her,

Then, one of their representatives contacts me to invite me to something called “Pride Ball,” and misgendered me. You didn’t do your research, you haven’t – obviously – watched Pose. You’re not following the true stories of the LGBTQ community, because you would know, that a woman like myself, should NEVER be misgendered! It’s so insulting, and I don’t think I ever want to use or buy your products ever again. I’m going to Louie [Louis Vuitton].

Attach to the video was a caption that read,

DONT PRETEND TO UNDERSTAND, DONT USE US! REPRESENT US ALL YEAR ROUND NOT JUST AT PRIDE FOR H.R. PURPOSES! DO YOUR DAMN RESEARCH BEFORE YOU VENTURE INTO A COMMUNITY! SO SADDENED BUT MOSTLY INSULTED!!!!!!!!! @coach

The Instagram video has garnered over 10,300 views, and has received responses of sympathy and support from many. Coach has even issued a statement of apology for their mistake, in hopes to repair their premature relationship. In a comment, the brand stated,

Dear Dominique, as we just emailed you, our apologies for this grave mistake. In our effort to celebrate you and the LGBTQ+ community, through our invitation to join us for Pride Ball, we clearly erred, using a template message that we didn’t check before sending, and therefore got it wrong. In your words, we should have done more to understand the transgender community to honor you, as a woman. Inclusivity is one of our company values and, while we endeavor to demonstrate this inclusivity every day, we are also learning. We hope you will help us learn and would like to invite, and several of your peers, for a conversation to understand how we can avoid future misses and support you in celebrating this beautiful community.

Jackson took to Twitter to post the same video which has garnered over 16,000 views. Coach has since responded to Twitter, as well.

Jackson is a lead actress in FX’s new show, Pose, which provides stories from the transgender community perspective set in the 1980s in New York City. According to the show’s website, the series has made history by being the first show to have a full cast of transgender actresses, along with the largest recurring cast of LGBTQ actors and actresses for a scripted series.

The show began airing on Sunday, June 3rd.
