Issa Rae And Laura Dern To Produce HBO Series About The Cabbage Patch Doll Riots
Issa Rae and Laura Dern are developing a limited series for HBO called “The Dolls”. The series will take place in Arkansas and recount the 1983 Christmas Eve riots that transpired over the popular Cabbage Patch Kids dolls.
Back in the 80’s the Cabbage Patch doll was a hot commodity. They were such a popular item that most stores often had trouble keeping them in stock. During the holiday season in 1983, one Hills Department Store in Charleston, West Virginia had a riot involving 5,000 people break out over the dolls.
The series will explore race, class, privilege, parenting and more. Issa Rae is also said to be starring in the show. Further details surrounding the series, or how many episodes will be included, have not been revealed. Laura Kittrell and Amy Aniobi, who co-write for Insecure, will also be co-writing alongside Issa Rae. The series will be produced by Dern and Jayme Lemons’ LA-based production company Jaywalker Pictures.
