Oscar Nominations Announced: ‘Black Panther’ & Spike Lee Make History + Regina King & Mahershala Ali Snag Noms!

The biggest night in Hollywood is quickly approaching and to get ready, the nominations for the 2019 Academy Awards were announced early this morning by actors Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani. If the stars align, blockbuster film Black Panther and director Spike Lee will have a lot to celebrate come Oscar night.

It’s hard to believe that Black Panther was released almost a year ago, a timespan that usually lessens a film’s chances at Oscar recognition, but that didn’t stop one of the biggest films of all-time from receiving some shine from the Academy. Black Panther racked up a total of seven nominations, including the highly coveted Best Picture nomination, making it the first superhero film in history to be nominated for the Academy’s top prize. #BlackGirlMagic was also rewarded for Black Panther, as Hannah Beachler received the first nomination by a black woman for Best Production Design and veteran Ruth Carter was nominated for Best Costume Design.

That brings us to legendary director Spike Lee, who has had a long history with the Oscars and was finally recognized for his work after years of being snubbed.

Spike Lee

His film BlacKkKlansman and Lee himself picked up three nominations in some of the top categories, including Best Director, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Spike Lee was first nominated for Oscar gold for his iconic film Do The Right Thing, earning a Best Original Screenplay nod. However, his Best Director nomination for BlacKkKlansman is a first for him.

Other nominations of note include Regina King for Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk and Mahershala Ali for his performance in Green Book, a film that has been shrouded in controversy do to claims of inauthenticity.

Mahershala Ali and his wife Amatus Sami Karim

The 91st annual Academy Awards are set to air on Sunday, February 24 on ABC. At press time, no host has been announced.
