Pop Smoke (real name Bashar Barakah Jackson) releases a statement about his tragic death. Today (Feb. 28th) Pop Smoke’s family shared a short statement, thanking fans for their support, noting that there are no public details that they can share about his death. They also asked for respectful reporting. The statement reads,
The family of Bashar ‘Pop Smoke’ Jackson would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone for your support. Every prayer, call, and act of kindness is deeply appreciated as we mourn the loss of our son, brother and friend. Brooklyn knew him as Bashar. He was educated and nurtured in Brooklyn and his rise to fame all developed from the place he proudly represented. Within the last year, his extraordinary giftedness was revealed to the world, introducing Pop Smoke. Unfortunately, there are no public details available regarding the murder of our loved one. We ask for respect and responsible reporting during this critical time. Inaccurate reports only add unnecessary pain to a grieving family.
Pop Smoke died on February 19, 2020, after being shot twice during a home invasion in Hollywood Hills, California. The home was reportedly owned by Real Housewives of Atlanta cast member Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave.
According to authorities, four hooded men entered the home at about 4:30 AM on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, one of them wearing a ski mask and carrying a handgun. Police received news of the home invasion from someone calling from the East Coast. Police arrived at the home six minutes later and found Pop Smoke with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. On February 21, 2020, The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner revealed that the cause of Pop Smoke’s death was a gunshot wound to the chest. Four suspects fled the scene but have not been apprehended.
