Toni Braxton Was Once Told She Needed A Heart Transplant: I Will Never Forget That As Long As I Live

Toni Braxton has been a famous face living with Lupus ever since she announced it in the early 2010s.

But the journey for her wasn’t always as clear-cut as it appears. She said during an interview that doctors first believed “everything was wrong” because of her super low blood count. But after being rushed to L.A.’s Cedar-Sinai Hospital, she was told she had Lupus, and that she had to undergo a heart transplant.

“They said I have lupus and it loves my heart. They also said I need a heart transplant. I will never forget that as long as I live.”

She ended up not needing the life-changing operation but still had to adjust to living with the auto-immune condition.

“I was petrified, depressed, and scared, but I realized I had to change my life. I may have lupus, but I decided I was not going to be a victim,” she says. “Now, I listen to my body.”

One way she’s handled it is not performing as much. She confessed that Lupus has impacted her career.

“I can’t deny it…I can’t do five or six shows a week like I used to, but I can do three or four shows,” she says. She also holds back from dancing on stage. I’m not a dancer but I do the 1-2 electric slide.”

She added that she’s learned to rely on her famous family, including having Netflix nights with her sisters, when she suffers flare-ups.

“Lupus doesn’t have a face, we hide it. We have the tendency to pretend we feel great, when we don’t. I’m learning to say it’s OK that I don’t feel well and that it’s perfectly fine to take that time for myself.”

She continued,

“When it gets hard, I usually tell my mom. Sometimes I hide it from my kids and say I’m going to the spa, when I’m actually going to hospital. And my kids stay at Auntie Jada’s because I don’t want them to worry.”

She also said she’s working her way to going vegan.

“I’m becoming plant-based. I’m in the process. But I’m going fully plant-based. It’s making me feel better, so there is some truth it. But I do miss a good burger!”

As for her go-to workout place? She said,

“I love Orangetheory Fitness, but I have to be careful. If I am fatigued, I take it easy.”

She also takes part in CBD to help get through the physically painful moments.

“I never knew about CBD. I was never an herbal user, but I’ve since educated myself about the healing properties of CBD. And it’s absolutely wonderful.”

She added,

“I’m lucky today. I’m in a better state today than I was when I was first diagnosed. I know what to do when my body feels weird. I listen to my body now. I always try to find the silver lining in everything. Today is a good day!”

And she also confirmed her new music is

“coming out very soon!”

We’re glad Toni Braxton is doing okay!
