Atlanta Police Fatally Shoot Black Man In Wendy’s Drive-Thru

While the nation still reels from the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, who both died at the hands of police officers, another tragic incident has made headlines.

According to new reports, Atlanta police fatally shot a 27-year-old black man, Rayshard Brooks, in a Wendy’s drive-thru in Atlanta. Like many recent police-involved killings, this one was caught on a cell phone camera, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed. Angela Stanton uploaded footage of the incident.

A spokeswoman for the government entity, Nelly Miles, said the shooting occurred around 10:30 Friday night (June 12th) at a Wendy’s on University Avenue. Police were alerted about a man sleeping in his car, making the other cars drive around him to pick up their food. Rayshard Brooks reportedly failed a field sobriety test shortly after authorities arrived.

Miles added,

After failing the test, the officers attempted to place the male subject into custody. During the arrest, the male subject resisted and a struggle ensued. The officer deployed a Taser.

Rayshard Brooks struggled and reportedly took away the taser from the officer, who is said to have opened fire. He was rushed to the hospital where he, unfortunately, passed away.

Atlanta Councilwoman Joyce Shepherd said she viewed the footage for herself and took issue with how the shooting happened. Protests also occurred at the scene on Saturday morning (June 13th).

The investigation is still ongoing. What are your thoughts on the incident? Let us know in the comments.
