Chadwick Boseman Fans Sign Petition To Replace Confederate Statue In His Hometown W/ Memorial Of Late Actor
Chadwick Boseman fans are looking for ways to help his legacy continue in more ways than one.
The Black Panther star tragically passed away Friday (Aug. 28th) after his four-year battle with colon cancer. Now, thousands have signed a petition to replace a Confederate statue in his hometown, Anderson, South Carolina, with a memorial of the late superhero.
As of Tuesday morning (Sept. 1), nearly 25,000 people signed the petition on Change.org.
The petition reads in part:
“Mr. Boseman is without question an American treasure and his accolades go on and on. It is only fitting that his work is honored in the same place that birthed him. Earlier this year efforts were made by local residents to remove a Confederate monument located in the town square of downtown Anderson. Unfortunately, this effort gained no traction due to current South Carolina law. It is currently illegal to remove or alter monuments dedicated to confederate war efforts in the state of South Carolina,(SECTION 10-1-165). This has made any effort to remove the statue impossible.”
It continues and notes that the current statue is placed in the middle of the city, making it impossible to avoid when going downtown.
The petition also says:
…Upon the removal of a monument to the past I can think of no better person than Mr. Chadwick Boseman as a monument to the future.”
The petition isn’t the only way fans and celebrities want Chadwick Boseman remembered.
Actress and “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg has also urged Disney World and Disney Land to build a Wakanda experience to salute Chadwick Boseman.
She tweeted:
“Dear People in charge of building NEW experiences Disney Land and World we don’t really need another Frozen land BUT what we could use is Wakonda, please Disneyworld Disneyland PLEASE build in Chadwick Boseman’s name WAKONDA”
