Dave Chappelle Responds To Criticism Over His Anti-Trans Comments In ‘The Closer’: F**k Twitter–This Is Real Life
Dave Chappelle isn’t backing down from his recent controversial remarks!
As previously reported, Dave Chappelle‘s sixth Netflix comedy special–The Closer–premiered earlier this week. During the highly-anticipated special, Dave Chappelle made a series of inflammatory remarks–specifically regarding the LGBTQ community. At one point, the 48-year-old comedian claimed he’s a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist)–someone who doesn’t believe trans women count as women.
“I’m team TERF! Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on Earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on Earth. That is a fact. Now, I am not saying that to say trans women aren’t women, I am just saying that those p*ssies that they got… you know what I mean? I’m not saying it’s not p*ssy, but it’s Beyond P*ssy or Impossible P*ssy. It tastes like p*ssy, but that’s not quite what it is, is it? That’s not blood, that’s beet juice.”
He also called out the LGBTQ community for taking issue with homophobic comments made by celebrities like DaBaby, Kevin Hart, and Boosie:
“All I ask of your community, with all humility: will you please stop punching down on my people.”
Since The Closer aired, various people and organizations have slammed both Dave Chappelle and Netflix for the special’s controversial content. GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) issued a statement on the matter, stating:
“Chappelle’s brand has become synonymous with ridiculing trans people and other marginalized communities.”
The National Black Justice Coalition also spoke on Chappelle‘s controversy:
“With 2021 on track to be the deadliest year on record for transgender people in the United States–the majority of whom are Black transgender people–Netflix should know better. Perpetuating transphobia perpetuates violence. Netflix should immediately pull ‘The Closer’ from its platform and directly apologize to the transgender community.”
Despite the backlash, it appears as though Dave Chappelle is unbothered and still living his best life! Chappelle performed a set at the Hollywood Bowl yesterday (Thursday, Oct. 7th), and received a standing ovation from the crowd. In response, the comedian remarked:
“If this is what being canceled is like, I love it!”
He later added:
“F**k Twitter. F**k NBC News, ABC News, all these stupid a** networks. I’m not talking to them. I’m talking to you. This is real life.”
