Chaka Khan Fans Speculate Singer Was Drunk Or High During Her Verzuz Battle Against Stephanie Mills

Was Chaka Khan under the influence during her recent sing-off?

As you may recall, a Verzuz battle between Chaka Khan (real name Yvette Stevens) and Stephanie Mills was first speculated to go down earlier this year. Stephanie Mills dished on the prospective battle back in June, saying:

“Chaka was interested. We were willing to do it. The Verzuz people weren’t interested. Yeah, they weren’t interested… They were not interested.”

Later, during an EXCLUSIVE interview with theJasmineBRAND, Stephanie Mills proclaimed:

“We will not be doing VERZUZ. Chaka and I will not be doing VERZUZ, no. We’re not an afterthought, you know. We were presented to them early and we were in negotiation with them and then in the 11th hour, they decided to go in another direction. And that’s fine. But, we will not be doing VERZUZ.”

However, things ultimately ended up working out, as Chaka Khan and Stephanie Mills went head-to-head on the Verzuz stage last night (Thursday, Nov. 18th)!

While many were excited to hear the singers square off, the battle ultimately sparked some speculation about Chaka Khan. Specifically, people online began questioning the 68-year-old’s sobriety while on stage–referencing her behavior while performing. Here are some clips for context:

On a lighter note, it’s also worth acknowledging that other Twitter users highlighted the “sisterhood” shown between Chaka Khan and Stephanie Mills during their Verzuz battle.

Chaka Khan has been open about her addiction struggles in the past. While she went to rehab as recently as 2016, she was speculated to be high on stage during a 2018 concert–sparking outrage from some audience members.

Neither Chaka Khan nor Stephanie Mills has publicly addressed the speculation.
