Alicia Keys Reveals She Didn’t Realize Lil Mama Crashed The Stage During 2009 VMAs Performance Until Jay-Z Brought It To Her Attention [VIDEO]

It looks like Lil Mama’s 2009 VMAs stage crash debacle is making headlines once again!

Even though it’s been over a decade since the crazy incident took place, most can still easily remember when Lil Mama, 32, unexpectedly jumped on stage with Alicia Keys, 40, and  Jay-Z, 52 during a performance of their song ‘Empire State Of Mind.’

In a trailer for the upcoming episode of REVOLT’s Drink Champs, Alicia Keys (born Alicia Cook) revealed her side of what went down that crazy night. According to the multi-Grammy-Award-winning artist, she didn’t even realize Lil Mama, born Niatia Kirkland, had hopped on stage until after the performance was over. She shared,

“The truth of all the truth-”

“All I know was on that stage Jay was here [and] I was here. In my head, I was such a gorilla at the time. My eyes –  I was like ‘this is what’s happening is – I’m going to destroy this record tonight.’  That’s all I had in my head.”

She continued,

“Somehow, however [Lil Mama] got over here. I didn’t even bear witness to [it]. The whole show I was ice –  so focused on making it amazing. I went backstage and Jay was like ‘so you ain’t see that?’ And I was like ‘what?’ And he was like ‘nah, you ain’t just see what just happened?’  And I was like ‘yeah, we killed it. That’s what just happened.’”

During a separate interview, Alicia Keys gave more details about how she really felt when Lil Mama joined her on stage. She said,

“When I tell you 100 I was oblivious to the idea that next to [Jay-Z] was another person, which kind of scared the sh*t out of me later when I figured it out.”

Alicia Keys’ recent confession has caused Lil Mama to trend online as people share their thoughts on the ‘Lip Gloss’ rapper’s impromptu viral moment.

Lil Mama has previously spoken on why she decided to join Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, on stage multiple times before. In one interview she explained her actions and said,

“Really I got emotional. I actually got emotional. I felt like ‘yeah, New York! Jay!’ And I started to feel like – I started to fill him and I start to feel me and I just felt the energy. And I got up and I started walking towards the stage and I got up there and I was just like rooting [Jay-Z] on as a champion.”

She also spoke about it more recently on WEtv’s ‘Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta.’

Lil Mama has yet to address what Alicia Keys had to say.
