Jay-Z’s commitment to music and social justice was put to the test. In August 2019, the NFL announced that they would be teaming up with Roc Nation, the entertainment company led by rapper and entertainment mogul Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter.

Jay-Z agreed to a multi-year partnership with the NFL to improve live game performances and expand the league’s social justice initiatives. The fundamental goal of this collaboration was to strengthen the community by fusing football with music.

The halftime show for this year’s Super Bowl LVI was widely regarded as one of the strongest performances to hit the stage.

The show, which included Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, and 50 Cent, was an homage to the West Coast hip-hop culture. However, behind the scenes, there was controversy over the show’s production.

Reportedly, Kendrick Lamar’s “We Hate Po-Po” was censored from the airwaves due to the potentially controversial material. Some fans believed the league should have authorized Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics since they are an integral part of the artists’ brand. The NFL also allegedly considered Snoop Dogg’s “Crip-Walking on Stage” to be provocative. Snoop alluded to, Jay-Z expressing his disappointment with the NFL’s intervention with the artists’ performance line up.

Snoop Dogg discussed Jay-Z’s support for the musicians and his threat to discontinue his association with the NFL.

In an interview, he explained:

“So then [JAY-Z] came down, and soon as he came in he hugged me. We hug each other tight. It was as if we won a championship. Like, you know when you’re genuinely happy for each other? People don’t understand, me and him are the ones. He’s the one on the East. I’m the one from the West. We love each other. Like, not secretly, like publicly, we love each other. It is what it is, so it’s like for him to go to bat for us and tell the NFL, ‘F*ck that. They perform or I quit,’ that was the most gangster sh*t out of everything. Then with attire and kneeling and all this … you can’t wear your gangbang shit? JAY-Z hit me like, ‘Wear what the fu*k you want to wear. Peace to the Gods.’”

What was the best performance in the history of the Super Bowl?
