DJ Jazzy Jeff Says Will Smith Had A ‘Lapse In Judgment’ As He Defends Him Over Oscars Slap Backlash: I Can Name 50 Times He Should’ve Smacked The Sh*t Out Of Somebody &  Didn’t

DJ Jazzy Jeff (real name Jeff Townes) is weighing in on the Academy Awards drama with Will Smith and Chris Rock.

The actor/rapper recently said his friend Will Smith, 53, had a “lapse in judgment” when he slapped Chris Rock, 57, last month at the Academy Awards. During a chat with WGCI Radio in Chicago, DJ Jazzy Jeff, 57, said,

“Don’t get it twisted that … it was a lapse in judgment. And I think the thing that I realized is, I don’t know too many people that has had the least amount of lapse of judgment than him. I can name 50 times that he should’ve smacked the sh*t out of somebody, and he didn’t.”

He added,

“So for him to have a lapse of judgment, he’s human. And I think a lot of the criticism comes from people who don’t think people like that are human.”

While he appears to be standing beside Will Smith, DJ Jazzy Jeff seemingly questioned the incident immediately after it happened, asking in a tweet,

“What was that????”

DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith have a friendship that dates back to the early 1980s. The two performed as the West Philadelphia hip-hop duo, DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, releasing their first single “Girl’s Ain’t Nothing But Trouble” in 1985.

They’re praised as being both entertaining and influential, releasing a number of light-hearted raps and pop-music tunes that made listeners smile because of their comedy-groove mix. Their debut album sold roughly 300,000 copies, catapulting them to multi-platinum status.

Jazzy Jeff and Smith joined forces again for the hit series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” which ran for six seasons from 1990 until 1996.

Smith, who is usually known for being quirky, fun, and full of inspiration, has been taking quite the hit since he made the decision to slap Chris Rock at the Oscars on Sunday, March 27. The questionable move occurred shortly after Chris Rock made what some have deemed an insensitive joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith’s, 50, hair, which she sports as a result of alopecia. Rock said,

“Jada, G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.”

In addition to the slap, Smith also told Rock to,

“Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth.”

The Academy announced on Friday, April 8, that Smith is banned from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years.
