Unarmed Pregnant Black Woman Shot 5 Times By Missouri Police Officer While Fleeing Suspected Carjacking

An unarmed pregnant black woman named Leonna Hale was shot five times by police officers in Kansas City, Missouri.

According to an eyewitness identified only as Shédanja, Leonna Hale, 26, had her hands up in the moments before officers shot her in the parking lot of a Family Dollar store on Friday night (May 27). Shédanja said Hale was attempting to run away from officers when they shot her five times.

Leonna Hale had been filmed laying in a pool of blood after being shot by officers responding to reports of an armed carjacking. The eyewitness filmed the incident and can be heard yelling out loud,

“They shot her! Oh my God, they shot her!…What the f**k! Oh my God, they shot her and they still putting her in handcuffs!”

Shédanja described a scene where officers opened fire on a woman who allegedly posed no threat. Reportedly, she told sources that when she arrived at the store, she heard officers yelling “get out the car” to two people in a vehicle next to hers. A man got out of the vehicle, and allegedly jumped a fence and fled while three officers ran after him. Leonna Hale reportedly got out of the vehicle with her hands up. Shédanja said that when officers told Hale to get on the ground, she told them she was pregnant and couldn’t.

According to Shédanja, Leonna Hale then started backing towards a fence and several officers approached her with their guns drawn,. Shédanja said,

“She did not pull out a weapon on them. She did not even have a stick in her hand.”

According to the witness, Hale had taken just three steps to run away from the officers when they fired five times. Shédanja told sources,

“I remember it because it didn’t stop. They shot five times.”

On the contrary– nearly four days after the incident– investigators started denying the claims, that Leonna Hall had been pregnant and unarmed. Sgt. Andy Bell of the Missouri State Highway Patrol–the agency investigating the officer-involved shooting– told sources that Hall was armed. He said,

“Yes, she was armed with a handgun, holding the gun in her hand.”

However, the force was unable to confirm if she had pointed the gun at officers before the shooting, which was captured on more than one body cam, according to Bell.

Reportedly, a spokesperson for the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, told sources they “don’t believe she was pregnant.

The spokesperson said investigators are still awaiting confirmation of pregnancy, and that it was not immediately clear if Hale had made the claim to officers, as the witness stated.

According to reports, the two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
