Nicci Gilbert Continues To Call Out P-Valley Creators, Accusing Them Of Stealing Her Concept: “You Can’t Hide Behind Remixing Other People’s Stories”
The drama between entertainer Nicci Gilbert and the P-Valley creators continues to unfold.
Following the premiere of P-Valley season 2 this past Friday (June 3rd), singer and creator Nicole ‘Nicci’ Gilbert-Daniels doubled down on claims that the show’s concept is not original. The former Brownstone singer is in an ongoing infringement lawsuit against the series, claiming there are notable similarities between P-Valley and her 2011 musical play “Soul Kittens Cabaret”.
Via instagram, Nicci claims to have read comments and reviews that condemn season 2 of the Starz drama. She stated:
“I have seen the reviews, the real review not the ones that are bot generated or that they paid for….the real reviews, from the real people, from the real fans of the show, are saying the show wasn’t giving what’s supposed to be gave.”
She continued”
“I feel like some of the incredibly talented people like the Mercedes character and Uncle Clifford….were underutilized….I feel like there’s going to be this pivot in effort to fool the people into believing that you actually are a real writer.”
P-Valley is a mississippi based drama created by Katori Hall, surrounding the lives of The Pynk strip club owner and dancers. The series is reportedly an adaptation of Katori’s 2015 play, “P*ssy Valley”. In the lawsuit, filed a year and some change after the show debuted back in July of 2020, Nicci claims P-Valley creators “knowingly and illegally used Plaintiff’s [Nicci] works to create the ‘P-Valley’ television series”. Representatives for Starz have yet to respond publicly to Nicci’s accusations.
Posted as a caption to her video, the 90’s R&B music artist wrote:
“It’s SO obvious that the writer of last night’s episode had NO idea where to take this story, because she didn’t create it. I have yet to see said writer, write an ORIGINAL thought or idea,”
She continued:
“I don’t care how many awards, accolades or dollars the machine pumps into her. You have to do the WORK and you can’t hide behind remixing other peoples stories and experiences & try to fool the people.”
Additionally, Nicci followed up with a couple of messages for those telling her to drop her grievances with P-Valley. She wrote:
“To the bots out there saying drop it, let it go leave them alone…This ain’t for y’all it’s for the REAL1’s who understand I wouldn’t be standing up to multi billion dollar media corporations if I wasn’t fight for more than myself. This is 4 ALL CREATIVES #Fight4WIRF #Pvalley”
