Smollett claims he’s “grateful” for the experience and says it allowed him to realize who his real friends are and exposed the snakes in his lawn. In a recent interview with media personality Sway Calloway, Smollett speaks about his experience positively. He reflected on wise advice a friend gave him in April 2019.
Smollett says:
“You may look at everything now and think that this is bad, you needed to mow the lawn so you could see all the snakes in your grass.”
Smollett talks about his coping mechanisms while dealing with the public portraying him to be a liar. Smollett explains:
“The way that it was served to everybody I absolutely understand why people felt betrayed.”
Smollett adds:
“I didn’t know what was happening then. I didn’t know how bad it was getting. For whatever reason I genuinely thought that people were going to be like ‘there’s no way that he did some b*tch sh*t like that.’ You know, I’m just like ‘y’all know me.’”
Smollett also admits to holding “some people accountable for the things they said” and “for the ways that they reacted.”
