The song’s original version by Madonna was released in 1984. According to Madonna, she didn’t feel it was representative of her life at the time, but she loved it because she felt it was provocative.
In response to ‘Material Girls’, as well as her track ‘Like A Virgin’, she said,
“I liked them both because they were ironic and provocative at the same time but also unlike me. I am not a materialistic person, and I certainly wasn’t a virgin, and, by the way, how can you be like a virgin? I liked the play on words, I thought they were clever. They’re so geeky, they’re cool.”

In the chorus of ‘Material Girls’, she sings,
“‘Cause we are living in a material world / And I am a material girl / You know that we are living in a material world / And I am a material girl.”

In Saucy Santana‘s version, which was made popular by the TikTok social media app, he raps,
“I want Chanel 9 boots / All these niggas steady jockin’ / ‘Cause they know I’m the truth / (Material girl) and I get it from my mammy / Balmain, bust downs, these hoes can’t stand me / (Material girl) currently working on a Grammy / Meanwhile, pussy poppin’ with ya man in Miami / (Material girl) Chanels and pearls / That’s the trick that it take to keep the girls (haha).”
