Dame Dash Names Kanye West The ‘Greatest’ Roc-A-Fella Artist Over Jay-Z
Dame Dash isn’t holding back when it comes to sharing his opinion on former friend and business partner, Jay-Z!
During a recent appearance on the Chill With Mac G podcast, Dame Dash was asked who he thought was the greatest artist to represent his former label, Roc-A-Fella Records. After a long pause, Dame named Kanye West as his pick. He shared,
“If it’s a choice between Jay and Kanye, I’m going with Kanye. All day, every day.”
Explaining the reason for his decision, Dame said,
“He’s more creative. If it’s about—now, I can speak on that because, you know, I worked with both of them, right? You know, Kanye is a true artist and he does it for the art and Jay-Z does it for the money. It’s two different things.”

Dame Dash then recalled Kanye’s chaining day — the moment he took the Roc-A-Fella chain off his neck and he crowed Ye as the new member of Roc-a-Fella records in front of his hometown of Chicago during Jay-Z’s Dynasty Tour. While laughing, Dame explained,
“That’s because Jay wouldn’t take it off his [neck]. If you look at it, I’m talking to Jay like, ‘Give him the chain.’ He supposed to give that sh*t back but I never got that back. I was gonna replace it but I never got to.”
Dame Dash is responsible for signing Kanye West to Roc-a-Fella Records back in 2002. At the time, Jay-Z was reportedly reluctant to sign the Chicago artist as a rapper as Ye was mostly seen as a producer back then.

In a separate interview earlier this week, Dame Dash reflected on his relationship with Roc-A-Fella’s co-founder Jay-Z. Dame Dash and Jay-Z created Roc-A-Fella together in 1994. When asked if he and Jay-Z “could’ve had more together,” Dame replied:
“Yeah, all that, but we were friends. … Like, how would you feel if your brother just betrayed you for money? Would it hurt?”
Dame proceeded to admit that Jay-Z’s actions weren’t surprising. The 51-year-old said:
“That’s the algorithm. It wasn’t surprising ’cause that’s what always happens.”
Dame continued:
“It was surprising ’cause no one—that’s what it was, we were breaking the algorithm, we were doing it a different way and sticking together, but that’s what always happens. They make one sell out the other, their friend, divide and conquer, that’s a normal story.”
Dame added:
“That was my n*gga, like we never argued, nothing.”
He shared:
“That’s why I didn’t know it was coming. … That was some real slick sh*t. I was like, ‘That n***a’s cold. He’s cold.’’
