Recently, Joann Kelly and her mother Drea Kelly discussed what it’s like to keep up with their identity following R. Kelly’s sexual abuse conviction. Joann Kelly said:
“A lot of people don’t know, I do music, I do visual arts– I went to school for it.”
Following her statement, Joann Kelly was asked asked how her relatives affected her music career. The singer’s daughter admitted her family both helped and harmed her. She shared:
“The experience has been, ‘you’re only getting this because of who your parents are,’ and then, ‘You’re not getting this because of who your parents are.’”
Joann admitted that her last name costed her numerous opportunities that could’ve changed her life. She admitted:
“From 13 up until 24 I’ve been trying to get into the music business.”
During the conversation, Joann reflected on a time where she traveled to Los Angeles and was ready to sign her music contract until someone discovered who she was related to.

As previously reported, R. Kelly, 55, was sentenced to 30 years in prison back in June after a New York jury found him guilty on all counts of racketeering and sex trafficking. Following his conviction, the “Step In The Name Of Love” singer had been ordered to receive mental health treatment upon his release along with mandatory therapy sessions for a sexual disorder.
