Original Story: (Jan. 4, 2023):

Keep Damar Hamlin in your prayers!

Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field during Monday night’s game (Jan. 2).

According to reports, things took a left turn when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin fell on his back moments after getting up from an open field tackle on Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. 10 seconds after his fall, Hamlin was administered CPR on the field and was taken out of the stadium to an ambulance. The NFL ultimately suspended the game at the 5:58 mark of the first quarter.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement:

“Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field by team and independent medical staff and local paramedics. He was then transported to a local hospital where he is in critical condition. Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available. The NFL has been in constant communication with the NFL Players Association which is in agreement with postponing the game.”

The official Twitter account for the Buffalo Bills also released a statement regarding Hamlin’s health scare.

“Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.”

Reportedly, a person may suffer from cardiac arrest when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood to the body’s organs. Dr. Anthony Cardillo, an emergency room specialist, said the next 12 to 24 hours could be crucial for the Bills player. Dr. Anthony Cardillo also said:

The primary concern is the length of time that he was not having cardiac activity. Every second counts.”.

He added:

“If you get hit at a very exact moment, it’s within milliseconds … that’s when you’re in cardiac arrest.”

As the Pennsylvania native continues to receive treatment this morning (Jan. 3), Cardillo explained that doctors will slowly start weaning the 24-year-old off the ventilator over the next 12 to 24 hours to determine if he can breathe on his own. Cardillo added:

“We know that he’s a young 24, healthy, conditioned athlete. He’s in the greatest possible situation to come back to a normal life at this point, but our prayers are with him to make sure he does recover like that.”

As Hamlin made headlines, the online toy drive fundraiser that he started in 2020 topped three million dollars in donations hours after the NFL star collapsed on the field. As fans wait on Hamlin’s health update, donations continue to pour into the GoFundMe fundraiser. One hour after his collapse, $74,000 was raised and quickly grew to $2,033,270 just before 1 a.m. today (Jan.3). It then soared to more than three million dollars an hour and 20 minutes later reaching more than 119,000 donations.

NFL players have taken to social media to publicly send their well wishes and prayers to Hamlin. Tee Higgins, the Bengals wide receiver who Hamlin tackled seconds before collapsing, took to Twitter and wrote:

“My prayers and thoughts go out to @HamlinIsland the Hamlin Family. I’m praying that you pull through bro. Love.”

Countless fans have also expressed their worries on social media as they pray for Hamlin to push through his recovery.
