Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Revokes Membership Of Officers Involved In Tyre Nichols’ Death
The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity has revoked the membership of three former Memphis police officers who were charged in the death of Tyre Nichols.
According to reports, Tadarrius Bean (Nu Mu Mu chapter), Emmitt Martin III (Sigma Lambda Lambda chapter), and Desmond Mills Jr. (also Sigma Lambda Lambda chapter) had their memberships terminated “effective immediately.”
On Tuesday (Jan. 31) Omega Psi Phi released a statement confirming their decision.
“We have since learned that three of the former Memphis police officers involved in the horrific incident were members of our organization. That is devastating! Effective immediately, the Fraternity has revoked the membership of the three former Memphis police officers and all related privileges they may have enjoyed as members of our Fraternity.”
The statement continued,
“We strongly condemn the conduct of the former Memphis police officers involved in the incident, including the three former members of our organization. The brutality shown in the video not only violated our moral sensibilities but also transgressed our Fraternal and established Code of Conduct. We have the utmost confidence in the judicial process and fervently pray that the Nichols family will obtain justice.”
As previously reported, Tyre Nichols was pulled over by police on January 7 for allegedly driving recklessly. Sadly things turned violent. Through body cam footage, officers could be seen pulling Nichols from his car and dragging him to the ground. After attempting to flee on foot, Nichols was aggressively beaten by police. He was taken to the hospital in severe condition after the incident and passed away on January 10—three days later.
Court records show that the men each face two counts of official misconduct, one count of official oppression, one count of second-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault, and two counts of aggravated kidnapping.
