Memphis Officer Sent Photos Of Bloodied Tyre Nichols To At Least 5 People After Brutal Police Beating

A former Memphis police officer allegedly sent photos of a bloodied Tyre Nichols to at least 5 people after he was brutally beaten by police during a traffic stop.

According to reports, officer Demetrius Haley allegedly took two photos of Tyre Nichols propped up against a police car with handcuffs. Haley admitted he sent a photo to at least five people including two fellow cops, a civilian employee of the department, a female acquaintance, and an unidentified person.

According to documents released by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission it was revealed,

“On [Haley’s] personal cell phone, [Haley] took two photographs while standing in front of the obviously injured subject after he was handcuffed. [Haley] admitted [he] shared the photo in a text message with five people; one civilian employee, two MPD officers, and one female acquaintance.”

The newly released documents are part of a request by the Memphis Police Department that the five officers who have been charged with murder be decertified and prohibited from working in law enforcement again.

In the request for Haley to be decertified, the Memphis Police Department wrote:

“Your on-duty conduct was unjustly, blatantly unprofessional and unbecoming for a sworn public servant.”

According to the documents, Haley, who was driving an unmarked car and wore a black sweatshirt hoodie over his head, forced Nichols from his car using loud profanity, then pepper-sprayed him directly in the eyes and “never told the driver the purpose of the vehicle stop or that he was under arrest.” Haley did not have his body camera on when he stopped Nichols but was on a phone call with someone who overheard the encounter.

As previously reported, Tyre Nichols was pulled over by police on January 7 for allegedly driving recklessly. Sadly things turned violent. Through body cam footage, officers could be seen pulling Nichols from his car and dragging him to the ground. After attempting to flee on foot, Nichols was aggressively beaten by police. He was taken to the hospital in severe condition after the incident and passed away three days later.

Court records show that the men involved with his death each face two counts of official misconduct, one count of official oppression, one count of second-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault, and two counts of aggravated kidnapping.

Preston Hemphill–the sixth Memphis Police Department officer involved in the arrest was fired in February after officers discovered more information while investigating Nichols’ death.
