Twitter Is Threatening To Sue Meta Over New Threads App

It looks like Twitter may be facing some stiff competition.

According to reports, Twitter is threatening to sue Meta over its new text-based platform which mimics the social media giant.

On Wednesday (July 5), Instagram’s parent company Meta introduced Threads, a text-based version of Instagram that resembles Twitter and other text-based social media platforms. Shortly after its launch, a lawyer for Twitter, Alex Spiro, wrote a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg accusing the company of engaging in

“systematic, willful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property.”

Spiro wrote:

“Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights, and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information.” 

He continued,

“Twitter reserves all rights, including, but not limited to, the right to seek both civil remedies and injunctive relief without further notice to prevent any further retention, disclosure, or use of its intellectual property by Meta.”

Spiro also accused Meta of of hiring dozens of former Twitter employees who

“had and continue to have access to Twitter’s trade secrets and other highly confidential information.”

A Meta insider says that Twitter’s accusations are untrue.

The source said,

“No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that’s just not a thing.”

Threads is Meta’s newly launched app that is similar to Twitter. It’s primary focus is sharing short snippets of text on the conversation-based platform. While the app is a standalone, it does require you to have an Instagram account in order to sign up. Not only does the app allow you to write up to 500 characters, it also allows users to share photos and videos up to five minutes long.

Mark Zuckerberg had this to say about Threads:

“The vision for Threads is to create an option and friendly public space for conversation. We hope to take what Instagram does best and create a new experience around text, ideas, and discussing what’s on your mind.”

On Thursday (July 6), Zuckerberg announced that Threads had already signed up 30 million users in its first day.

The new platform has been deemed the “Twitter killer” by tech experts, with many predicting it to replace the Elon Musk-owned app completely.
