Ice Spice Shares Why She Keeps Her Raps ‘Super Simple’: ‘I Don’t Want Them To Fly Over People’s Heads’
Ice Spice isn’t too worried about keeping up with hip-hop’s best lyricists.
In a new interview with Complex, the Bronx rapper discussed her writing process and revealed why she prefers to keep her rap lyrics “super simple” for her audience.

The 23-year-old said,
“I wouldn’t consider myself a lyricist. Obviously, lyrics go into music and I do think about them and I do be having bars in my music but they’re just super simple.”
Ice Spice, born Isis Gaston, continued,
“I want them to be digestible, I don’t want them to fly over people’s heads and they never catch it. I want people to hear it right away and be like, ‘OK, that was cute.’ But it’s also fun at the same time.”
Regarding her methods for making hits, the rapper’s main producer, RiotUSA, said she has developed a style that works for her in the studio. He noted that Ice Spice doesn’t write down her lyrics on paper, but instead goes into the booth “freestyling line by line.”
Ice Spice quickly launched into fame in late 2022 with her breakout song “Munch (Feelin’ U),” which went viral shortly after its release. Since then, the New York native has secured collaborations with superstars Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift.

In June, it was reported that Ice Spice earned the most Top 5 hits this year on the Billboard Hot 100 list. Her three chart-topping tracks include Taylor Swift’s “Karma (Remix),” “Princess Diana” featuring Nicki Minaj, and PinkPantheress’ “Boy’s A Liar Pt. 2.”
