Issa Rae Speaks On The Mass Cancellation Of Black TV Shows In Hollywood: ‘You’re Seeing Very Clearly Now That Our Stories Are Less Of A Priority’
Actress, writer, and producer Issa Rae recently kept it candid surrounding the topic of Black television shows being erased in Hollywood.
During the 39-year-old entertainer’s latest interview, she spoke on navigating the entertainment industry, her journey in the television space, and fewer Black shows getting the green light from production studios.

As you may know, Issa Rae gained industry recognition thanks to her YouTube series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” which led to her landing the opportunity to produce her hit HBO series “Insecure.” After the show ended, she created the comedy series “Rap Sh!t,” which HBOMax canceled this month after two seasons.
“Rap Sh!t” follows two best friends – portrayed by Aida Osman and KaMillion – who reunite to form a group in hopes of catching their big break as rappers in the Miami area.
In her interview, Issa Rae expressed her concern about Black content creators not being able to tell their stories on television. She said,
“You’re seeing so many Black shows get cancelled, you’re seeing so many executives – especially on the DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion]side – get canned. You’re seeing very clearly now that our stories are less of a priority.”
The Emmy-winner continued,
“I am pessimistic, because there’s no one holding anybody accountable – and I can, sure, but also at what cost? I can’t force you to make my stuff. It’s made me take more steps to try to be independent down the line if I have to.”
Despite the adversity and her show’s recent cancellation, Rae shared that she’s working on a few projects of her own to put out to the world. As far as what’s next for the media mogul, she said,
“I’m writing a couple of different projects – one for myself and one to produce and create with others – and I’ve been feeling so inspired and excited to get back at it.”
Rae added,
“I’m embracing that challenge. The industry is in flux, so it’s really inspired me to focus and hone in on what stories I want to tell. I’ve been laser-focused on getting these projects up and running.”
