A$AP Rocky On Rihanna’s Long-Awaited Album: ‘She’s Working On It’

The wait may finally be over.

While taking pictures with fans in Paris on Saturday (Feb. 17), a video shows bystanders asking Rihanna’s boyfriend/rapper A$AP Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, about her upcoming 9th studio album.

He responds, “She’s working on it,” before walking away with a smile. As expected, the fans erupt with cheers, with one of them yelling out,

“We love you, A$AP!”

It’s been over seven years since Rihanna dropped her last album, ‘Anti’ in 2016. The chart-topping project, which features hits like “Consideration,” “Work,” and “Close To You,” has become near and dear to Rihanna, who previously called it her “most brilliant album” yet.

Since then, the Grammy-winning artist has been working on projects away from music. She launched her Fenty Beauty line in 2017, promoting diversity and inclusivity in beauty and fashion for women of all shades and sizes. Then, in 2018, she debuted her lingerie brand, Savage X Fenty, which was promoted during New York Fashion Week in 2019.

In an interview last year with another publication, Rihanna revealed that she hadn’t made a new album yet because she didn’t feel she could top ‘Anti.’

The “Umbrella” singer said, 

“In hindsight, it really is my most brilliant album. I say that because in the moment, I didn’t realize it. But it always felt like the most cohesive album I’ve ever made. When you break it down and you realize this album goes from ‘Work’ to ‘Kiss It Better’ to ‘Needed Me’ to ‘Love on the Brain’ to ‘Sex with Me’ to ‘Desperado.’ And somehow it all fits, and not for a second did you glitch?”

She continued, 

“But there’s this pressure that I put on myself. That if it’s not better than that then it is not even worth it. It is toxic. You’re right. It’s not the right way to look at music because music is an outlet and a space to create, and you can create whatever. It doesn’t have to even be on any scale. It just has to be something that feels good. It could just be a song that I like. It literally could be that simple.”

While taking a break from music, Rihanna also welcomed two children with boyfriend A$AP Rocky: RZA Athelston Mayers and Riot Rose Mayers. 

Rihanna and Rocky were close friends for nearly a decade before their longtime friendship turned into a romantic relationship in November 2020.
