Ice Spice’s Manager James Rosemond Jr. Reveals Strategy Behind Rapper Owning Her Masters & Publishing
Ice Spice is winning in and out of the studio.
Ice Spice’s manager, James Rosemond Jr., disclosed to Billboard that the up-and-coming rapper has successfully acquired ownership of her masters and publishing rights, a significant achievement for a new artist in the music industry.
When discussing the strategy behind Ice Spice’s record deal, James highlighted the focus on equipping her with thorough industry knowledge and instilling a mindset geared towards independence and long-term wealth.
He elaborated on the challenges and rewards of holding out for a favorable deal, stating,
“It was really about giving her all the right information. Like, this is where the market is going. It’s about independence. It’s about retaining ownership; about intellectual property and generational wealth. That sometimes there are sacrifices—that people may be dangling money. But if you want a certain type of deal, you have to be patient as we do the work to have leverage.”
He continued,
“That was the conversation early on. And thank God she listened and was able to hold out while we kept running up the numbers on ‘Munch.’ Then it became, ‘Let’s entertain these deals’ and, as I said earlier, begin to shape one in a creative way.”
Due to their strategic planning, Ice Spice now controls her masters and publishing rights, as confirmed by James. Under the terms of her deal with 10K Projects and Capitol Records, she not only retains ownership of these rights but also receives upfront financial support for her musical projects:
“She still gets upfront money as if she’s a work for hire … It’s a hybrid type of deal that you don’t see often. And it comes with doing the work, having patience, and creating leverage.”
