Ashanti Says She Was ‘Shocked’ By Nelly’s Proposal: ‘It Was Such A Beautiful Intimate Moment’

R&B princess Ashanti is opening up about her sweet proposal from fiancé Nelly.

The singer revealed that the two were all alone when the rapper “shocked” her with a marriage request, noting that she was overjoyed to give him a yes.

Ashanti, 43, dished about being caught off guard when Nelly, real name Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., 49, popped the big question during a new interview. Sharing that she was wearing his t-shirt and boxers, lounging around the house when the proposal happened, she stated:

“It was just such a beautiful intimate moment…I had absolutely no idea.”

Continuing, the “Rain On Me” songstress admitted that she felt like a proposal was “gonna come soon,” but reiterated her genuine surprise by it all, adding that afterward:

“I cried, I gave him the biggest hug and kiss ever, I facetime’d everyone I know…I was overjoyed and shocked and surprised and happy, kind of like all in one.” 

As you may recall, Ashanti and Nelly’s relationship dates back to 2003 when the two musicians were still fresh in the mainstream industry. They dated on-and-off for around a decade before officially calling it quits in 2013. Fans were elated to see the two reconnect at Fat Joe and Ja Rule’s Verzuz battle in 2021, however, with Nelly confirming at the end of last year that the pair are officially an item once again.

A month later, Nelly and Ashanti confirmed they were expecting their first child together after months of speculation. During the recent interview, Ashanti went on to share how she and the Country Grammar artist reacted to news of their coming baby, stating:

“Never in a million years did I think we would be here…I always dreamed about [pregnancy]. I wanted it so, so bad and I just feel like the timing was perfect.”

She added about Nelly learning the baby news:

“He was so happy and we were both smiling and it was so funny…I was actually at his mom’s house… He was in the studio. It was a really cool moment. It was a little bit of everything.”
