Mona Scott-Young opened up about connecting with Missy Elliott during a newly released interview with producer Carlos King. She stated:
“I remember calling Missy. She was one of the first artists that we were taking on outside of the core artists we already had…tracked her down…called…I was like ‘Hi, this is Mona Scott…I would love to talk to you about management.’ She goes like ‘Who? What? Nah I’m not interested.’ *CLICK*…she didn’t want to be an artist at the time.”

Continuing, Mona Scott-Young explained that Missy “was really passionate about writing, producing, and developing other talent” at the time, and had bad experiences previously in her attempts to become a mainstream artist. The Love & Hip Hop creator went on to share, however, that the “Get Ur Freak On” artist was ultimately convinced to invest in herself by music exec Sylvia Rhone, explaining:
“[Missy] was at a point in her life where she was just like, ‘Look, I love music, I know I’m talented, but I don’t want to do this artist thing’…Sylvia saw that and was like, ‘Guess what, if you give me an album, I’ll give you a label.'”
Sylvia Rhone would then tap Mona to manage Missy, as she’d already been doing a stellar job with her other artist Busta Rhymes. Mona stated that she was sent on a trip to meet with her new client and was ignored by Missy for 4 days, nearly ready to throw in the towel by the last day. However, Mona said there was a change in the musician by the last day of their time together, stating:
“I set up some stuff for her and before I walked away she was like ‘Yo, what’s your name again? Mona? Yea hold up I wanna talk to you.’ And that was 27 years ago.”
Missy took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm Mona’s story, writing:
“yup that’s how it went and here we are over 2decades later…. God’s plan is in his control”
