Toni Braxton Says Lupus Diagnosis Made It Harder To ‘Digest’ Shocking Passing Of Her Sister Traci: ‘I Was The Sick One’
Music star Toni Braxton recently opened up about the difficulties of processing her sister Traci’s death.
The 56-year-old got candid about how much her sibling’s death rocked her, admitting that it came as a shock especially since she was historically the one dealing with ongoing health struggles.
Toni Braxton spoke about the matter in a recent preview for her family’s forthcoming rebooted reality show The Braxtons. As theJasmineBRAND exclusively reported in November of last year, the series, formerly named Braxton Family Values, was renewed for another season on WeTV after being canceled in 2020 following season 7.
In the preview clip, Toni chatted with her sisters/co-stars Towanda, Trina, and Tamar, as well as her mother Dr. Evelyn Braxton about Traci’s sudden Esophageal cancer diagnosis, and how her passing in 2022 left the singer with much to process. She stated:
“When Traci got diagnosed, it didn’t seem real at all…It still doesn’t.”
“For me, family is the most important thing in my life…I spent my whole life caring for and protecting my sisters, but this was different because there’s nothing I could do. I felt so helpless, like I couldn’t do anything to save her.”
The “Unbreak My Heart” singer, who has been navigating a lupus diagnosis since 2007, went on to express her personal perspective of the tragedy, adding:
“That’s really hard for me to digest, because I was the sick one, not Traci.”
As you may know, complications from Toni’s autoimmune illness have repeatedly shown up throughout her career. In April, the Grammy Award winner discussed how difficult it was trying to get a proper diagnosis for the disease and how it caused her to collapse several times while performing. She also revealed that she had to see several professionals before finding out what was going on with her body.
Dealing with her own health struggles for years, it’s no surprise why her sister’s fatal cancer diagnosis hit her the way it did. Traci’s illness was concealed from the public up until her death was announced by her husband who shared she was privately battling throat cancer.
The debut episode of The Braxtons is set to premiere on August 9th.
