Parents Of Boston High School Student Sue District After Son Was Punished For Using Al

The parents of a teenager in Boston are suing their child’s school district over the use of AI.

According to local news reports, a student at Hingham High School was punished last year after he and a classmate used artificial intelligence (AI) to write a history paper, though they reportedly only used it for research, not to complete the assignment.

When a teacher discovered AI was involved, the students were given detention, barred from being a part of the National Honor Society, and given a zero on that portion of the project, resulting in the usual straight-A student earning a C+ in the class.

Now, the parents of the teen, who is now a senior, fear that his college application process is being hindered over the ordeal, which they claim they were told would not happen.

Jennifer Harris, the mother of the student, reportedly argued that the school didn’t have any guidelines for or against the use of AI prior to the incident. She continued:

“His punishment for this situation has been extreme and ongoing and it is now interfering with his applications to college, which they promised us when we discussed it back in December that it wouldn’t do, so we had to get a lawyer involved because they were not being transparent, they were dragging their feet.”

And added:

“I think [the school was] trying to get to the summer so we would drop it and not think about it.”

Though the high school has reportedly chosen not to comment on the case at this time, it’s noted that they have since updated their school’s guidelines.

The case made its way to a federal courthouse earlier today (October 22nd).  There have been no updates at the time of this writing.
