TJBDebates: X Users Question Meaning Behind Gwen Stefani’s ‘Hollaback Girl’ Record

Are you a “Hollaback Girl”?

Over on X, internet users are debating what exactly Gwen Stefani meant in the 2004 record. As you may recall,

“Hollaback Girl” is a song featured on Gwen’s debut solo studio album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. In addition to Gwen, the Neptunes’ Pharrell and Chad Hugo are credited writers for the catchy tune, which was nominated for Record of the Year at the 48th Grammy Awards.

It’s been 20 years since the track was released and people still want the tune’s backstory. Amid the growing discussion, one X user dug up a clip of Pharrell explaining that “Hollaback Girl” came from something he heard supermodel Naomi Campbell tell someone during a dispute.

Gwen has also previously spoken on the record and how it came to be, sharing a few years ago,

“Basically [a ‘hollaback girl’ is] someone who is going to be, like, going back at somebody that’s coming at them. In a bad way or a good way.”
