‘Power Rangers’ Star Walter Emanuel Jones Responds After Show Writer Calls His Casting A ‘Mistake’: ‘It Was A Milestone & An Honor’
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers actor Walter Emanuel Jones had some things to say after the show’s head writer called his casting as the Black Power Ranger a “mistake.”
The TV star took to Instagram to react to the remark, writing:
“I understand the impulse to address what might be seen as cultural insensitivity, but calling it a ‘mistake’ would dismiss the impact it had on countless people around the world who found inspiration and representation in TV’s first Black superhero — morphin’ into none other than the Black Power Ranger! It wasn’t a mistake; it was a milestone. It was an honor”
Jones’ comments come after Tony Oliver, head writer of the 1990s show, called the casting of Jones as the Black Ranger and Thuy Trang as the Yellow Ranger “such a mistake” in the recent docuseries Hollywood Demons, acknowledging the unintended racial stereotypes.
However, Jones, who portrayed Zack Taylor, previously made it clear he took no offense to the situation. In an interview last month, he said he felt the casting was “quite powerful.”
What’s your take on the situation?
